The Third Moon Fair (三月节, Sanyuejie) is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Bai ethnic group in Dali. Held on the 15th day of the third lunar month, this vibrant celebration lasts for several days and marks the arrival of spring. It’s a time for the Bai people to honor their ancestors, celebrate nature’s renewal, and strengthen community ties.
The festival is rich with cultural expression, featuring traditional music and dance, lively food fairs, and spirited competitions that highlight the unique heritage of the Bai. During this time, Dali’s streets come alive with colorful decorations, and rows of stalls offer handmade crafts, local delicacies, and traditional Bai attire. The air buzzes with music, cheerful voices, and the mouthwatering scent of street food, creating an atmosphere that’s festive, welcoming, and deeply rooted in tradition.
The rainy season may not be a favourite time of year for everyone, but in Yunnan, it’s warmly welcomed—it brings the perfect conditions for wild mushrooms to thrive. Beginning in May, the rains signal the start of mushroom season, and from June onward, a wide variety of wild mushrooms begin to appear in local markets. For those who enjoy foraging, our host in Dali offers a special experience: a morning trip to the nearby mountains to hunt for wild mushrooms, followed by a delicious hot pot lunch featuring your freshly picked finds.
Dali offers a fantastic setting for team building, corporate retreats, and group events, with a wide range of activities and venues.
